1,000 Soldiers

1,000 Soldiers all right by me
1,000 Soldiers okay by me
It's the price we must pay for Democracy
1,000 Soldiers, all right

1,000 gone is all right by me
1,000 gone is okay by me
Just don't print the pictures for us to see
And 1,000 gone is all right

The faceless, the nameless, the innocent blameless
Yesterday tucked into bed
But kids become soldiers and hope they grow older
And not become numbers instead

1,000 dead is all right by me
1,000 dead is okay by me
See, none of them came from my family
So 1,000 gone is, all right

I went to the deli for something to eat
And there stood this man right in front of me
He was reading the paper, and I heard him say
"I guess that's the price we must pay..."

I said "Excuse me, kind sir, would you explain it to me...
This high price we pay for our Democracy?
And just one more thing - won't you tell me
What do you mean by 'we?' "

1,000 Soldiers all right by me
1,000 Soldiers okay by me
It's the price we must pay for Democracy
1,000 Soldiers, all right

1,000, 900, One thousand and one
Young lives are ended before they've begun
After how many more can we still say we've won?
Is 10,000 soldiers all right?

1,000 Soldiers is NOT okay
One soldier gone is a high price to pay
I think a piece of us dies each time we say
"1,000 Soldiers - okay."
